Glory
| Incoming:
March 13, 2010 Source: Owner relinquished under pressure Appearance: ATROCIOUS! Incoming physical condition: Severe malnourishment at 28#, dehydration, over-grown nails, extreme hair loss, Staph infection, muscle atrophy, and the equivalency of bed sores from over crating and wearing a sweater for long periods. Intact. Estimated age: 6 or 7 Temperament: Very sweet, wags her tail non-stop as if she understands people are trying to help. Does food and crate guard but heck, who can blame her? Training: Unknown at this time Notes: NISA volunteers Bev S. and Kathleen M. traveled many miles to pick up Glory and reported that she wagged her tail every mile they drove back to IL. I would venture to say Glory knew that things were about to improve and that life would be a whole lot better than before. "You betcha Glory, it's gonna be a whole lot better thanks to great volunteers, fosters and supporters!!!" First up was a full physical to assess medical needs, followed by sending out a blood sample for a full analysis including a Thyroid panel. (Thyroid results did indicate a very low level and Glory was put on a thyroid supplement, Soloxine.) Initially Glory was started on a course of oral antibiotic to counter the Staph infection over a large portion of her body and to heal the open sores on her legs. Next up a gentle medicated bath to soothe her angry skin and alleviate some of the itchiness she had tolerated far too long. Continued bi-weekly medicated baths will help her skin heal quickly and in a few weeks Glory will begin some water therapy to build up some muscle in her legs. Soon to follow was the start of good nutritious meals several times each day. To say Glory is lovin her meals is quite an understatement! I should note here that when a dog is grossly under weight, malnourished, the introduction of food must be in smaller quantities until the gut acclimates and is able to digest properly. A large meal would near impossible to digest and with our breed bloat is always a risk. Glory settled in nicely, gets along well with her canine and feline housemates and loves soaking up all the attention. From a human perspective, I would think it would be very reassuring for Glory to share a new home with two other Samoyeds. Prayers, of course, are always appreciated and if you have a few spare dollars NISA always needs donations for the Fur-Kidz.
Update: May 19th As it should be for every animal, life is sure good for Glory these days. She sure loves strolling around her new yard, has solicited play with her housemates now that her legs are stronger, and recently had a full physical exam at the U of I. We're waiting on the results.
